I don't like using my card in places such as clubs in the UK, let alone abroad.

Unfortunately it is not uncommon. It is also not uncommon in Eastern Europe for bars/clubs to make ridiculous surcharges on drinks bought. It could even be something like that.

I too can't see how you are going to get anything back, because of the time between it happening and reporting it.

It's a shame they didn't make several very quick transcations totalling upto the overcharged amount. You could have then complained that it was unreasonable to have made all the transcations so quickly and that the CC company fraud should have picked up on it.

But your friend had the top copy showing $30..... Can't alter them.

Jobs a good un. money back.

Unless he threw it away

Precisely. Lost the top copy. You can imagine how bad he felt - he had checked the amount when he signed and it was correct.

I think I might have pursued it a little further, long shot though it was, and offered to represent him. From the fax copy they sent through, it was pretty obvious that the "1" had been added afterwards. (Different hand writing style - they had written in an authorisation code which included "1"s that were different.) I can imagine the merchant might have been so lazy that they didn't even bother to write using carbon paper and shoved the "1" in directly using a biro.
