Insurance: Compulsory excess & Voluntary Excess ??

Hi,

Going through some price comparison sites and comparing quotes - some policies just have a standard excess, but some policies have BOTH a Compulsory excess & Voluntary Excess.

Can someone explain what all this means - rather confusing when trying to do a comparison !

Many thanks

voluntary increases the excess above and beyond the standard/compulsory.

e.g. a compulsory excess of £100 with £0 voluntary would be a £100 excess. If you then decided on a £50 voluntary excess then your excess would increase to £150.

Some insurers use this to be sneaky and get your premium down.

If you need to claim do you want to for out £100 compulsory and £50 - £500 voluntary?

Both these figures vary between insurers and some vary with the age of teh driver. Under 25 maybe higher and under 21 maybe worse.

The higher the excess s usually a lower premium but as with most things in insurance. Its not always the case.

You need to check and treble check.
