comparethemarket.com

Hi There.

Be aware when using this site for house insurance quotes. Iwent on this site and got a price listed for £133.58. It was from Legal and general. I went into buy this at legal and general site. It told me to ring them to check all the questions were correct. I rang them and they told me the quote was now £166.38, because I asked for a excess of £150.00, but I had only asked for an excess of £100.00. I had put these details in on comparethemarket and it showed an excess of £100.00.
Legal and general said to me no that is in addition to the £150 excess so in total to get the price for £133.58 I would have to agree to the excess of 250. I said to them that this was not stated on comparethemarket.com and the advisor from legal and general said this is always happening the site isnt much good. I refused their offer and went back into comparethemarket.com and tried another 2 quotes and i rang them both up and the price on compare was the price which they would both offer me an insurance with an excess of £100.
So BEWARE if you get a cheap quote from legal and general because you could be getting an insurance from them with a 2.5 excess more than you wanted.

    Your poll is nonsense.

There has been a number of issues with data being pulled through from comparison sites to the provider site incorrectly. However, typically, when asked about voluntary excess, you state the amount on top of the normal. Not the amount you want including compulsory.

A quick check using my details indicates it does make it clear what is voluntary. L&G came out best price on mine and I clicked the link through to site and the same voluntary excess was carried through correctly. This suggests that it is your failure and not the comparison site.

Do you understand the difference between compulsory excess and voluntary excess?

  • This is a general problem with price comparison sites.... Once you click on the cheapest price, and get passed to the providers website, the price increases or the cover is not what you specified.

the best way to understand price comparison sites is that they are just a list of adverts very loosely based on your inputted criteria.

frankly you get better cover and price going directly to the main insurers and cutting out the stupid cat in the middle and his fat fee.

    ....

My son had the probem with comparethemarket changing the data between input and the insurers. We both checked each entry and made a screenshot of each finished paged. And now that you cannot buy online but have to talk to someone, the error is spotted and the price goes up. Wheras with buy online the error did not exist.

This is obviously a scam to get you to believe that you have entered incorrectly and gives the salesman a chance to convince you that the price is the best you can get as you can no longer buy online but have to talk to someone.
