I suspect the trouble is that this fits the BBC's narrative at the moment: the economy is knackered and the Government is trying to hide things from you. You can't trust the Tories.
Just because its the BBC narrative does not make it untrue:DFew people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -
I suspect that the general public do not realise white how much money the manufacurers and supermarkets invest in the psychology of marketing.
Its not just the changing of the product weight/quantity etc. A simple change like making a biscuit smaller but adding two more can make the pack slightly bigger but of the same weight, then six months later they remove the extra two and reduce the weight. Of course a little re-design of the packet printing can make the reduced weight less visble by using less contrasting colours.
The supermarkets also use product placement to con the customer. I am sure they would say that they were only improving the shopping experience for us all.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. It is demonstrably untrue that changes to packaged quantities distort inflation measures. I demonstrated it!
You are right that just because the BBC says something, that it is would be wrong to state that it is untrue for that reason alone. However with political stories it's not a bad starting point.0 -

Freeze it.
I know - don't start rattling on about the capital depreciation of the freezer and the price of leccy.;)"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

No then.
I would say it does ... what with a grain of sand being a heap and all. Fundamentally it displaces something else to the tune of about six quid this coming year, I've no idea what that will be. The unknown perils of squash price rises. If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.0 -
A lot of things have suffered during the past 4 or 5 years of recession but I refuse to believe that spending on food or petrol has gone down.
You see these behemoths buying 10 packs of pizzas, chips galore and gallons of fizzy pop and then driving round non stop for hours on end even though we are supposedly poorer as a country.
The roads are full of cars as ever and the number of takeaways seems to have gone up exponentially. I was hoping that at least some good could have come from the downturn but there seems to be no stopping eating and driving to excess. It's why supermarkets can put on deceptive sales and manufacturers can downsize on the sly. People will continue to buy their goods regardless.0 -

Maybe I am the exception, but my average daily spend on petrol in the year to date has dropped to £1.13 from £1.91 in the year to 2011-11-17.If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.0 -
This has been going on for years - maybe the BBC have only just noticed. Either way it works - food retailers have managed to expand product margins since the start of the recession.
The irony is that the consumer ends paying MORE than inflation when pack sizes are reduced. The nappies might be a good example - the pack size stays the same but there are two less nappies - the retail pack has the same packaging, takes up the same space on a pallet, warehouse picking charges stay the same etc. so, per nappy, proportionately less is spent on the product itself.
Merv can't just increase interest rates and make it all go away - he needs the consumer to have a bit of backbone too and provide some resistance.0
