The great Amex scam

Play them at their own game.
I have an Amex Gold charge card, solely for the purpose of getting sign-up MR points to convert to Avios.
I spend the required amount (£1000-£2000) in the qualifying period and then cancel the card before the end of the first year, thus avoiding the annual fee.
I apply for a new Amex Gold card just over 6 months later....and Repeat.
This method works with nearly all Amex cards of all types including co-branded ones and you can stagger the process so you have just about always got one.
Just make sure you go for a good sign-up bonus with no annual fee in the first year (or a low one).
On the way through this process, you can usually find someone to give a referral to and earn even more MRs, because they will get an even bigger sign-up bonus and you will get some MRs too.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
miduck, spot on;;;I have the free platinum card, had it about 4 years, and I have MBNA amex which I use all the time now, as better cashback for me, as supermarket/petrol are main usage,and Capitalone Mastercard as backup;
Since thisAMEX shopsmall £5 cashback this month, I,ve used my 2 platinums(wifes) and MBNA, aint half give it some welly, £100 cashback this week so far, no problems, 13 transactions yesterday alone.
Phoned Amex yesterday, rejected at one,it was machines fault, Amex were great, carry on shopping.
As I hadn,t used my Plats for ages, I thought they wouldn,t be honoured, but they were.
Cannot fault Amex, I used plats till I received my cashback, then just used mbna amex afterwards.No need to cancel, no fee involved.
Read the print, and choose right, and Amex cannot be beaten in my opinion. Gonna replace Cap 1 with new one to get 5% next,for xmas shopping and backup then back to Mbna,. "Himple"
Completely agree with you Joe. Up until recently I was using debit cards to pay for groceries, fuel etc.
After becoming a MoneySavingExpert.com convert, I took out an Amex platinum cashback, and we spend every penny we can possibly on that, obviously paying it back in full every month. In three to four months we have earned nearly £150 in cashback.
We have used the fantastic shop local scheme to the tune of £150 so far, and will be using the foursquare deal to rack up more freebies.
AMEX is really pulling out all the stops at the moment. Just hope they keep these offers going!0
