Windows keeps informing me of an update to install, it keeps doing this even though I keep refusing to install, the problem is I do not know if it is genuine or an attempt to hijack my PC, the window that pops up has the following:-

"Windows Genuine Advantage Notification is part of Microsoft's effort to reduce software piracy, installing this software can help confirm that the copy of Windows installed on this pc is genuine and properly licensed.
If your copy of Windows is not genuine, the software will provide periodic reminders to help you take appropriate action and protect yourself from security threats by counterfeit software"

My copy of Windows is genuine,(well it came from the retailer pre installed and I have no reason to believe it is counterfeit), and has been on the computer for nearly 3 years without problems, do I need to install this software? is it genuine? and if not is there a way to stop it keep requesting to install? as there is still an icon on my task bar stating "updates are ready for your computer" and that has been there every day for over a week now, I keep denying it, and it keeps requesting.

If you don't want the notifications, you can turn off auto-updates:

Thanks for that, I already know about it, but do not want to turn off auto notifications, I really want to know if this is genuine,if there is any advantage to installing it and if not how to get rid of this particular request for me to install.

If it's through autoupdate then it's Microsoft, whether you consider that genuine or an attempt to hack your pc depends on your view of Microsoft.
