Really loose loo seat- wrong size fittings?

Options
I replaced my loo seat recently with a wooden one which I'm happy enough with apart from being unable to get the flippin' thing to be tightly fitted!
The fittings on the seat actually snapped off within weeks because we were constantly pushing it back into place.
I went and bought a set of replacement fittings which have got a chrome bar across between the hinges. I think this is part of the problem as the bar seems too long. Should I try to use a hacksaw and take a centimeter or so off the bar? Even when I take it all off and screw it back on, it is instantly loose.
Where am I going wrong?

  • shorten the bar to the correct length, then when putting it all back together on the pan use silicon sealer when you screw it back together, make sure there is enough silicon in the holes in the pan so when dry takes up the "slack"

    HTH!

Forgive my ignorance, but when you say 'the holes in the pan' are you talking about the holes on the actual toilet? The holes in mine are about 1-1.5" in diameter. Do I put sealer in the hole and push the fittings up through it?

  • Yes that is what tigerbodhi means.......
And for gawd's sake don't use anything other than your fingers to tighten up the nuts.........you will crack the toilet pan.

Yeah, I get you. Had to stop my dh using a big spanner the other day. Apart from anything else, it just ruins the plastic wings on the wing nuts so that you can't grip them.
Will have to go and hunt out the hacksaw now from the shed.

  • yep, thats what I meant, the holes in the actual toliet pan base bit, they are always well oversize and need restricting, silicon or no more nails are ideal for this, also this grips the hinges onto the top of the pan to help stop it slidng, finger tight should be enough if you leave the silicon to set.
