A nice slowish growing shrub that is great for winter colour is callicarpa profusion, really boring the rest of the time, but really comes into its own at this time of year with berries of the brighest purple on bare stems.

I've seen this about recently and wondered what it is called - thank you, it is other-worldly

I inherited one, and in winter it is rather bare and straggly, but as you say, in spring it is quite something, and it has nice leaves in summer through to winter. Mine also has some Bitter Sweet growing through it which I like.

You can add Hamamelis (witch-hazel) to the list . You will get scented flowers and also has medicinal properties.
