Santander wont let me pay off my o/d

I have been trying to pay off my o/d with Santander a little bit at a time, normaly £50 a week.

The first week i had to phone them because the website woundn't let me do it.
The girl i spoke to made a complete !!!! of it and i was awarded £50 compensation, which was nice.

The second time o/d reduced on line by £50, no problem.

Today the site won't let me do it so i phone them up again.

This time the girl tells me i have to make a payment to clear the complete balance of the o/d..?

So im not happy about this and ask to speak to her manager.

He then tells me that my payment has been "blocked by the underwriters" and he can't do anything about it and i'll have to go into the branch to sort it.

Im not happy..

Anyone got any ideas as to why this would happen, or is it just a ploy by the bank to keep me in my overdraft so i have to pay them £20 every month?

GRRRRR...

How can this be a ploy?!

That said, how are you making payments? Can't you make them by
    - cash/cheque deposits?
    - bank transfers?

Hi there is nothing to stop you making the payment and reducing the debt ( not the overdraught allowance) untiul the debt has been cleared then remove the overdraught.

It is the way i did it and is actually better for you . If you reduce it weekly they will make a credit check every time and it looks bad on your credit check.

    Ermm ???

Are you sure you have both been singing from the same song sheet about what you are asking ? What exactly are you wanting to do ?

If your account is overdrawn - ie you have a debit balance but within our agreed overdraft then paying money into your account either by cheque or cash over the counter or transfer by some other means will reduce your overdrawn amount or take you account into credit.

You don't need your banks "approval" to reduce the amount you are overdrawn by adding funds but it sounds like you have been asking - or at least your bank is under that impression to remove/reduce your overdraft whilst still overdrawn ?

Who cares what the overdraft limit (as long as you're within it)?

    Just pay the debt down!
  • There seems to be some confusion here, i'll try again..

    My overdraft is currently £700..

I have for the last two weeks paid £50 a week off my overdraft so the o/d is now only £600.

When i do this im not just paying off £100 that i could, if needed to, use again. Im reducing the actual limit.

So where as before i could spend up to £700 i now can only spend up to £600.

The plan is to pay the o/d off completely as i seem to live in it.I get charged £1 a day and as i get paid weekly it's easier for me to pay it of weekly when i can afford it.

Would you be able to do this by leaving the limit at £700 and just not going below £600?
Then once it is all paid off reduce it one time to zero or whatever you think is appropriate?

So by me reducing my o/d limit every week, they are doing a credit check?

Would this be a check confined to the bank or is it somthing that would effect my credit score/History?

It would be the easier option but i am rubbish with money. As hard as i would try i would know that there is money available in that account.

Im just trying to get myself straight.

The option to lower or raise my o/d limit is on the Santander website in Multiples of £50..

I would like to think that by _reducing_ it you won't get credit checked. But I don't know.
