new router help please

I have bought a Netgear DGND3700v2 modem router. I connected today (hardwired) to a desktop pc. When my son tried to wirelessly connect his laptop he was unable to.
I tried to wirelessly connect on the pc, had difficulty finding the netgear in range, refreshing brought it up but showing only 1 bar in the connectivity strength. I am less than 10 feet from the router and telephone junction box (in the same room). Reconnected the old router and the strength is full. Does anyone have any ideas (in very simple language plz ) as to what I'm doing wrong and what I can do to get it to work properly. It didn't come with a cd just online Netgear Genie instructions.

It could be wireless interference. Try changing the channel in the routers configuration.
