Contacting Tesco - 0845 Numbers

I wrote to Tesco after I had some bad ham. I only wrote as the store I went to can only be contacted by using 0845 number @ 4p a min.
After nearly a month I got a reply. Nothing in the letter to apologise for the vile ham, infact it was not mentioned. They did however go on how fantastic their new salt labelling system is and how it is being taken up by companies such as Danone.
On the 0845 numbers they claimed that the prices were set by BT & they had no control of it. They also claimed it was fairer to get all customers to pay the same rate. ( I only wanted to ring the local store and tell them their ham was vile). They also claimed that they do not profit at all from these numbers and BT make all the money. Is this true?
From the letter ' Tesco do not profit from any 0845 number calls. BT sets the rates & instead Tesco pay to have this flat rate set' - I just don't believe it

Don't forget about http://www.saynoto0870.com/. I found the proper number for my local Tesco on there, after looking up the 'official' one on the Tesco website.
Edit: Oops, dora37 beat me to it0 -
I did look but could not find the actual store, it may be there but what worries me is the claim that they have no control or profits as it is done by BT, I just do not believe it. Any one from BT able to confirm that
. I also told them that at 4p a min it was 4x the amount I would pay to call my friends in the usa 24/7, but that didn't get mentioned either.
Not only do they make vile ham but it seems they are vile to the core!Nudge nudge, Wink wink, Say No More!0 -
In fairness, 0845 numbers are the old 'local rate'. It is unlikely that Tesco receive a share of the call revenue from these numbers.0

You can always call 0800 50 55 55 and ask for the geographic number of the store you want.
Many are listed on www.saynoto0870.com/search.php - most appear to end in the digits 00.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
I could be wrong but I think that only the telco hosting the number make any money from an 0845 number. They are simply a way to call anywhere in the country for the cost of a local call and it doesn't actually become an issue unless you have free national calls included in your phone package.
Don't forget a lot of people still only have the option of free off peak calls so 0845 numbers are good during business hours.
A company only starts to profit from phonecalls once you get into the 0870, 0871 "national rate" and 090 preminum rate numbers.0 -

I would imagine that the line rental for an 0845 number is less than for a geographic one.
And in many cases calling an 0845 number can cost more than calling a geographic number: particularly if you want to make your calls through an 'indirect' provider.0 -

While I agree totally that Tesco are rip offs (customer revenge is winning).......if you'd used your 0845 number after 6pm, it would only cost 1p per minute.
It is classed as a local number but varies in price as do other calls.
Geographic numbers can be found for most Tesco 08 numbers.Couponing....."every little hurts"
Half of the people can be part right all of the time, Some of the people can be all right part of the time.
But all the people can't be all right all the time. .........I think Abraham Lincoln said that.
