Gas meter in new house

Options
Hi Guys

I was wondering if anyone out there could offer me some advice. I am a first time buyer and mve into my new home 18th May. I visited last night to measure up for windows and whilst I was there the seller advised that he is currently with N power and has a meter with a card and key.
We currently rent and pay DD monthly to scottish gas for both electric and gas.

I have no idea about the meters (card and key?!) and none of my friends of family have one. I am i better off getting rid of it? if so how would I do it and roughly how much would it cost?

I think I want to take scottish gas over with me but would I have to stay with N power as they have the meter?

I know thats a lot of questions and apologies but so confused!! TRied phoning SG last night but was on hold for 60 mins then got cut off!

Cheers

You don't need to speak to Scottish Gas until you actually move, take your final meter readings when you move out of your current property and call them through within a couple of days afterwards.

With regards to the new address, call nPower 3 days before you are due to move in to give them time to reset the meter if necessary and arrange the issue of a card/key.

To have the meters changed, you can either ask nPower to change them when you move in, or if you are staying with Scottish Gas you can wait 4-6 weeks for the change back to go through then get Scottish Gas to do it. It doesn't really matter who you ask and it will usually be free, although nPower might refuse as some companies have a policy of making you wait for a few months before they will allow you to change the meters.

If you do want to stay with Scottish Gas, I would recommend trying to get the meters changed by nPower as soon as you move in, as usually there are offers open to those with credit meters what aren't open to prepayment meters (even if you are planning to have them changed), for example at the moment you could get £40 credit off your gas bill. I should also make you aware there are cheaper tariffs than BG's standard one, both from BG and also other suppliers, so you should consider doing a comparison online to find a cheaper deal.

Thanks for your reply - I see now why people say moving is stressful. Turns out that the meter is for the electric (which is provided by scottish gas! and the gas is from Npower! -not metered)
Will do the comparison tool on MSE and see whats best. Defo don't think meter is the way forward for me as not organised enough!!
