British Gas trying to persuade me to stay

I followed Martin Lewis's advice and fixed my gas and elec with Scottish Power. I have now been contacted by my present supplier Scottish Gas stating that as I am a low user of gas and electricity I will not be greatly affected by the increase and in fact my monthly payments will go down by £2 (Iam currently in credit for both gas and elec). They are also offering me a £200 payment if I stay with them. Does anyone have any advice. I have put them off until Monday when they are going to phone me back.

You cannot stay with Scottish Gas because you have already switched. You can however transfer back (or to any other supplier) on liability for your current tariff's early termination charges.

Regarding whether or not you are a low user what is your annual electricity and gas consumption in kWhrs?
  • I was told that my gas was 15000 for the year. This does not mean much to me.

15,000 kWhrs/year gas is close to average use, not low use. In that case you were "lied to", or misinformed to put it more politely. Something to ask the "salesperson" about when they phone again on Monday.

I think the OP has a future switch date, hence they are still supplied by the current supplier until the date passes since the current supplier pays up to that.

So, I'm thinking the current supplier is considering objecting to block the switch.

If so, that's an abuse of the process since it doesn't state they can object because the customer has changed their mind.

I've responded in the other thread because I noticed that response first. I *think* we are same lines, but expressed differently.:)

Absolutely, just thinking they are exploiting the objection window by very quickly contacting customers when the notification of the switch comes through.

A breach if SLC14 if so!

I'm confused - The post headine is "British Gas trying to......", but the body text says the OP is switching away from Scottish Gas

However there have been posts of late that Brit Gas have been offering a £200 bounty to customers switching away to stay, but questions as to just how and when the £200 is paid don't seem to get answered

If the OP's report that his existing supplier is quoting "reduced D/D's" as an inducement, but not what the annual costs are, then that alone is good reason to run a mile.

Dogshome British Gas is branded as Scottish Gas in Scotland but they are the same company. Poppets, jalexa is right you could have cancellation charges if you switch back. Which tariff did you sign up for with ScottishPower and I will confirm. Thanks David

    David,

What do SP feel about the BG/SG tactic? I have asked for each Supplier to explain their policy on this matter.

Your potential customer is basically being bribed to stay with a vague promise of £200 credit not to see through their switch.

Is this within the Regulations or is this sort of free for all legitimate? Customer's like the OP are rightly confused.

Eon have responded, could SP also do so please?
