I read recently, that Thorntons are going to be concentrating more on selling their chocolates via the internet and supermarkets.

I think it is fair to say that people look at Thorntons chocolates as a cut above the standard Cadburys/Nestle chocolate products. But money is still tight for many, so most people settle for a standard chocolate bar.

So they have a problem, because selling it at the prices of the past, means less sales, but selling it cheaply and in supermarkets certainly to me, cheapens the brand.

As an aside, I was flicking through the freeview channels and was shocked to see QVC selling chocolates at £30 - £40 a box and even more shocked, that as they were saying that some items were sold out, that people are willing to pay such costs for chocolates.

Some people really must, have too much money to waste.

They could have been where Hotel Chocolat are instead.

The HC in my town is always packed whereas the Thorntons (not an outlet store) is like a ghost town. I am not just which demographic Thorntons is aimed at now. For example, if I just wanted to get some nice cheap choccies for a friend I'd buy Celebrations or Heroes, but if I want a lovely gift I'd buy HC.

Thorntons does seem to have lost its way.

Their website has also gone downhill. I think the revamp is badly designed, more difficult to use, and prone to glitches.

I went to place an order the other day but gave up in frustration.

And I agree the prices are all over the place, different from website and store to store.

I prefer Cadburys to Thorntons any day.
No you're not a vegetarian if you eat any animal or fish, so do not insult genuine veggies by calling yourself one!

Thanks to everyone who posts competitions. You are the stars of the board :T:j:T
  • I remember as a young girl going to Thorntons, picking toffee, which was on a tray and they'd bag it for you in a paper bag. It was a novelty, I loved the treacle toffee but although the toffee is nice, it's not special anymore.
The ex bought me Hotel Chocolat chocolates once and they were something special!
  • Thorntons has indeed lost its way. I'd be surprised if it was around for much longer. About 12 years or so ago, we actually met the owners at some social do or other, if memory serves aright they were from The Potteries area of the UK. I remember them saying about the importance of Thorntons being "a family firm" with family values, or some such.

I've no idea f Thorntons is still a family firm or if the owners sold out long since. Whatever, the business has fallen into the hands of marketing people who couldn't run a market stall. What should've remained a distinctive and slightly-premium brand has become yet another where the full RRP has ceased to have any meaning at all -- so only an idiot would ever pay full price -- and the product's quality, mediocre.
