Blue badge benefits?

Going to pick up my blue badge tomorrow.
Apart from being able to park in a disabled bay and no parking costs in some car parks, are there any other benefits?

Though I might be able to get a free bus pass, but just rung council and u have to get DLA, still waiting to hear about that.

Benefits of parking anywhere the hell you like?

I've just come out the dental hospital this afternoon, car park full as always. This great big Nissan is parked full on the pavement with their blue badge folder laid out on the dash. It's always a blue badge in situations like this.

Would rather not be disabled, but i am and unable to work, can not claim ESA as i do not have enough NIC credits. Worked since i was 16 until i was made redudant. Then nursed by mother in law after she had a stroke. Been ill the last 12 months.

You cant park where the hell you like ie near junctions, blocked entrances or where it indicates no loading etc

Not all car parks are free dont think I come across one in my area accept disabled spaces on road and a few pay and display places on road not actually car parks although we have used some car parks in other areas that were free. Hospitals sometimes provide free parking but not all do its always worth checking and dont take it for granted.

My daughter who is disabled got a free travel permit on buses from council which she finds useful to go to her voluntary job.

Some bridges are toll free but you need to apply before you use them ie Humber bridge for example, we have always paid as we arent local to that bridge

You can park on double and single yellow lines as long as there are no loading bans active (look for the kerb markings). Be warned, you must not park obstructively on the yellows - if you do a CEO is still entitled to issue you a PCN for restricted street parking because you're not abiding by the rules.

You can park in on-street P&D bays all day unless otherwise specified.

You CANNOT park in bus stop clearways (I've had plenty of disabled people tell me they can until I pull out the disabled parking book and prove it), residents bays (some councils will let you but officially you can't and its a local decision).

Whether a BB gets you a bus pass is up to your council, my local authority allows it but others require DLA. Similarly, you may or not be able to park in bays marked for permit holders or residents only, contact the relevant council and ask.

You can never park in loading only bays or bus stops, you can park on yellow lines if there's no loading restrictions (signs/kerb markings) for up to 3 hours. It doesn't entitle you to parking in Parent and Child spaces either if all the disabled bays are taken.

A Blue Badge rarely gets you exemption from tolls, most require DLA eligibility, but you do get exemption from the London Congestion charge for up to 2 cars.

That's about it.

I thought the whole idea of blue badges, and other schemes like this for the disabled, were meant for equality?

Why the need to benefit?

eg Why does crossing a bridge for free work out as an equality to an able bodied person who, errrm, pays?:(

Most but not all disabled people work part time or not at all.

I can no longer work and do not want to claim benefits, but as i am home allday and not very mobile I need to heat my home.

On aday out not paying for parking and or tolls might mean we can afford to go out. Every penny counts, i do not drink or smoke but do like to go out as a family if we can

well I used to use the Severn bridge for free VERY regularly (and the Dartford crossing) - but then I was on the motorbike
