air conditioner or fan thing

i wonder if it worth buying a air conditioner or maybe just have a few fans instead as i keep reading portable conditioners are noisy,.what about the ceiling fans things ,does any one know if they are any good..thanks

Portable air conditioners can be quite noisy and dont forget that they usually require a hose to be stuck out of a window which i find bizarre given an open window defeats the object of having air conditioning in the first place.

The better makes will use quieti-sh motors but these machines are just heat exchangers and use compressor technology so expect at least some noise.

Fans - ceiling, floor standing or desk mounted all move air and thats about it. If your surrounding air is warm they will move it creating a breeze but they will not actually cool anything. In fact in physics the opposite is true but thats to complex to discuss here.

One other option you may see in local DIY sheds is something called a chiller which is sold as a cheap airconditioning type unit. They allegedly use cold water to cool a room down. Never tried one myself but i have not heard to many good things about them.
