We are having around 125 guests at our evening do. We too were struggling with the cost of feeding ALL the evening guests aswell as the 60 day guests. Our venue offers an option of hot roast sandwiches as part of the evening food. We have decided on that option, although we will have to cater for all 125 it works out the cheapest option. We too are going to put that on the evening invites so people know to have some tea/supper before they come. I do agree that there is nothing worse than people going to a party and being hungry (we are all big eaters) so if it is mentioned that there will be light food it's their responsibility to eat beforehand.

I'm veggie. Had I known the 'buffet' at the last wedding party I went to was a hog roast I might have eaten first. A dry bread roll and some salad isn't very appetising, I'm afraid.

Just a word of warning about catering for fewer than 100% of your guests - your venue may not provide enough plates/cutlery/napkins etc. If you have 100 guests, but only cater (pay) for 60, what are the other 40 going to eat off/with?

That's a very good point, I'll make sure the venue put on extra crockery. If it's just finger food and bacon butties then at worst the guests can make do with napkins.

Regarding food preferences - wheat and dairy make me a bit ill, so I always take something like some flapjacks and a peanut butter sandwich to any event! Sorted :D
Went to 2 weddings this year, the first was a buffet dinner, we waited for the queue to go down and there was nothing left but salad leaves.. the OH was glad of my peanut butter sandwiches and flapjacks! At the second the happy couple had kindly asked about my dietary preferences and let the venue know - starters and mains were great but I still got the same dessert as everyone else which was choc cake and ice cream.. doh, but made up for it from the sweetie jars. :)

At least with things like the bacon rolls it's a) cheaper, and b) you know that there's one for everyone so people aren't left short if the gannets get to the finger food ;)
