Brands, underwriters & unfair claim handling?

I've had a 12 month plus nightmare having bought insurance from a well known high street brand, underwritten by a well known, high profile insurance company but the minute I claimed I was passed to yet another company who could be a case study on how not to handle a claim. Because they took so long I can't shop around for a new provider as I am "mid" claim at renewal time, nor can I change to a different policy with my current provider for the same reason - heads they win tails I lose. So - their shoddy performance means I'm tied in with them for at least another 6 months. isn't this wrong? Has anyone else experienced this or found a way around it?

Whoever has told you that you cannot change insurer at your renewal has mislead you.

Your present insurer cannot hold you a "prisoner".

Explain the circs to your chosen new company and get them to agree that when your claim is concluded if that results in your ncd being reinstated they will amend your premium and refund any difference back to you from the start of the policy.
