Couriers for Fragiles

I've bought a small fish tank on eBay (fluval edge 46 litre). It was auction format and listed in the wrong section, so I ended up getting it for next to nothing.

It's new, but not boxed, and was listed as cash on collection or arrange a courier at your own risk. The seller is wrapping it up for me the best they can to avoid damage.

Can anyone recommend a courier for fragile items? I know all couriers are a risk, and most won't insure glass items. But at the price I paid it won't be the end of the world if it did get damaged, I just want to try increase the odds that it doesn’t.

Thanks in advance, Phill.

I think the seller is being daft here, and possibly you are too. Seller is prepared to 'wrap as best he can' to avoid damage- so what chance do you honestly think you have of getting this in one piece? Tank of that size needs blocking out and double boxing at least, it will be travelling under half a hundredweight of other parcels. Maybe dumped in a depot overnight as well.

No courier is going to insure it unless it is boxed and wrapped much more appropriately

Try Shiply for a fragile service.
I would never trust a main stream courier with anything made of glass, let alone a heavy fish tank
  • Before you go with any courier check what that do not cover, you will be surprised at the tiny amount of things that actually do cover.

I sent a mirror 2 weeks ago with UPS and took out the extra coverage, it arrived in shards even though I had packed it with 5 layers all round of bubble wrap, sent it in a think box and pastered fragile tape all round the outside. I had photos of the mirror and sent them to UPS and was told that they do not cover mirrors.

I should imagine it would be the same with glass so your tank with not be covered.

Sounds like you are the new owner of a glass jigsaw.
Its down to the quality of the packaging in the end

Glass is routinely excluded from insurances. You are taking the risk and the onus is on the sender to pack it so well that it will survive intact. Packing 'the best they can' is unlikely to be good enough.
