CRB check for a job failed what can i do?

HELP!!!!! Hope this is the right place
I've just got myself a temp christmas job at Royal Mail and i'm supposed to be starting training on monday via an agency.
I had a phone call yesterday from from Royal Mail saying that my CRB check has got a disclosure on it and it is affecting my application.
She asked for my basic info, name, dob, address then asked if i had any tattoo's with names and if i had ever lived at another certain address (which i hadn't)
After speaking and ending the call i realised that this is my sister who used my name and date of birth over 10 yrs ago when she was arrested for i think shoplifting. I had a summons for court and went the police station and they said they would sort it!
Obviously they haven't and it is still showing up on my records as my name is tagged with my sisters as an alias.
I really really want this job, even if it is only til christmas. Is there anything i can do to hopefully still start my job and clear my record?
Thanks in Advance

  • Ok, since no one else has replied I will have a stab at this. If the convictions are you sisters and not yours, and it was her that was prosecuted for them, then I believe you should be able to get in touch with the Criminal Records Bureau and have your CRB check amended. I don't think this is unheard of, I have read about people getting results back that belong to people not even related to them.

It might perhaps be worth checking with the CAB and seeing what the correct procedure to do that is, as I don't know. Good luck.

You have to fill out a form. If your sister was fingerprinted at the time you should be able to prove your identity. Not sure what implications it has for her.

  • Hi this happened to me, though it wasnt somebody i knew just a person with same name and DOB as me. Im afraid I havent got a positive story for you. I had applied for a volunteering position at a maternity hospital and I got offered the position (dependant on crb check). This took a year to come through and when it did it had somebodys conviction for assault. I went through the process of appeal ( not sure thats right word) and had to be fingerprinted at police station and send off passport photos of me. I received a letter from the police a week later confirming that the conviction was not mine. I rang the crb back up, they had also recieved notification from police that this was not my conviction. The told me because it had been a year since I applied I had to go through the whole process again. It took another year to get my crb check through, and it was on there again, i was so angry and the job had long gone. Im still battling this and its been 5 years, its absolutely rediculous.

So im sure eventually you can sort this out but it wont be a quick process and I definitely dont think it will happen in time for christmas.

A year for a crb check?! I'd send a strongly worded letter of complaint. the longest I've ever had to wait was six weeks. A year is outrageous, I didn't even think that was possible.

i once got a CRB check back from a girl who wanted to do childcare, it showed a child related offence so I automatically put her in the no pile. But as she was quite young I had my doubts and when I checked the date she would have committed the offence when she was 8. I checked it out and found that she was the victim and the offense was committed by some-one of the same name at the same address. It only took a very quick phone call for this to be checked and a new clean CRB sent. So it can be done very quickly.

I think you're talking about just applying for one there?

That's a completely different kettle of fish to correcting an error on one!

Considering how important these bits of paper are deemed to be these days - no-one seems to consider a straight forward efficient correction process to be a necessity!

It can be a horrendous process to get it sorted out!

The actual use of a bit of paper that tells someone you've not been convicted of anything in this country, or one or two other countries who might or might not share their records with the UK is, of course, highly dubious.

For many of the higher profile cases in recent years, having a crb check would have made no difference whatsoever.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Yes as I've never known a CRB take 1 year.
  • Thank you for the replies!
I went to the police station on friday to try and sort it, but they only gave me a number for disclosure Scotland, who i rang.
I spoke to a lady who told me that there are too many similarities between me and my sister (she also gave my NI number in when arrested as well) so she gave me 2 options, either to have the crb certificate sent out as it is and then dispute it later or wait for an appointment from police to have fingerprints done! Option 1 wasn't really an option for me because my sister has been in prison several times since 1999 for god knows what offences (burglary, shoplifting and probably drug offences what i know of!!!) so i daren't think what is on it!
So now i've got to wait for an appointment to get fingerprints done and hopefully get this horrible mess sorted.

I thought a conviction for shoplifting would not show, surely a conviction like this would be 'spent' after a certain amount of time but a lot less than 10 years.

It's hardly fair to be honest, people do change.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
