I work for a store that recruits online - everyone applicant has to apply online and book a slot when they when have passed. 1 slot only allowed per applicant.

I had another today, arguing that the store said we have to unlock her application. she was on my screen as rejected, so i told her no!

well she went off on one.

I looked her up and she couldn't spell her name, the national insurance was wrong and she had done 2 separate applications, but the address was correct - i asked her why the details were wrong and she said oops, it's spelt with a c!

i am bringing it up with my line manager when we have out team meeting tomorrow.

it makes me angry that these people are getting application numbers and booking interviews lots of time and genuine people struggle to get them

The fake people surely get caught out if they don't have the right details, like a passport or birth certificate that is asked for at interview?
sounds very easy to get an interview where you work

you have to apply online and fill in your details and do an online test. if you pass you get offered a real face to face interview and more tests in store but only if there ir a vacancy and a slot available to book. stores can have one job but maybe 3 slots, 3 applicants and we book them and they go to the store for the interview. if it's a scam they are taking jobs from genuine people!

it works when people are honest. something needs to be done to stop it as it's wasting my time never mind the business as these people just keep applying with different emails and details!
    maybe ip address blocked?
  • Of course it is a scam!

They get the slot, dont bother turning up for the interview but use the paperwork as "evidence" they have obtained an interview for that week and that they are entitled to their JSA.

It will be one woman acting on behalf of about a dozen claimants who probably dont speak good english. They probably all live in the same house/street.

Im betting you don;t get feedback from the company you are sending them to? woudl be interesting to see how many/if any actually do turn up!

no see what happens there surely is the JC check?!

The company she is sending them to is the one the OP works for is it not?

As they said 'I work for a store that recruits online - everyone applicant has to apply online and book a slot when they when have passed. 1 slot only allowed per applicant.'

If it is someone ringing up on behalf of a friend, perhaps the manager thinks that is OK as to query it would be to turn away potential business. The Op has raised their suspicions with the manager and has done their job properly.

But I think the OP should raise with the manager how they feel having to talk to someone who is pretending to be someone else. It no doubt can make people feel uncomfortable. I know it would make me feel uncomfortable.

isn't it part and parcel to have many candidates ringing up for jobs?

How do you know if it's the same person? Some people can sound similar but if you have many applicants how can you keep track of them all?
  • good idea about the paperwork for the jobcentre, they could use the letter we send to tell the jobcentre they are trying to find work.
we get feedback from the store, such as failed do not hire due to poor interview or did not arrive.
people need a full birth certificate or passport and something with proof of address and ni number, so it would be difficult to actually beat the system
how do I know it is the same person? she talks a particular way and argues when I refuse to book her an interview or when I ask her why she can't spell her name
our meeting was cancelled this week but I have emailed my concerns to my team leader and it is on the agenda for friday

    thank you everyone !

it annoys me because they are taking slots from people who are desperate for a job

Except that don't need to have obtained an interview to be entitled to JSA. You just need to be applying for work, which your online system would confirm if the JC called to check that X has applied. I really don't think that that is the explanation.

It sounds like she is working as almost an unofficial agency - setting up interviews for people (possibly people new to the country). I wouldn't like to say whether or not this is a benefits scam, if people are turning up for interviews they might genuinely want a job, but as it is a job that requires an online test they might be getting the same person to do it again and again because this person knows how to pass it, and the others just need to turn up at interview.

If you have access to their IPs I would check to see if someone is filling it in multiple times and do an IP block.
