recruitment - is this dodgy?

I deal with recruitment and had this woman call today, looking for a job.
on checking her out, she had a different name and had an interview at a store
and now also wanted another interview at a different store

i am sure she phoned last week with a different name but that time, no vacancies were available.

These are store jobs in london

What could be going on here? Is she applying for other women and they go for the interview?

thanks for any ideas. I mentioned it to my line manager and he didn't seem bothered.

The woman keeps changing her name, and getting interviews. I'm sure it's her that has rung me 3 times and other people have taken the same type of call from a similar sounding woman

  • How are you sure 100% it's the same woman and how do you know the same woman has gone to all these interviews? ID theft maybe?

Maybe she just thinks if she interviewed once and didn't get it you blacklist her for other stores, so if she keeps changing name she can get interviews then if someone offers her it then blame the wrong name on a paperwork mix up?

Did she get any of these jobs?

What makes you convinced it's the same person?
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

Do the names all sounds as if they're a similar ethnic group? I wonder if she's trying to assert that you're discriminating?
  • More likley she is conducting the initial phoning stages on behalf of "friends" who are perhaps not confident enough, and then sending them off to the actual meeting in the hope they secure the position. Dont you usually have to register in person at an agency anyway? before you trundle off to an interview?

    And PetersmithHQ - eh?;)

The OP doesn't necessarily work for an agency though, I know that Sainsbury's do phone screenings before interview as I used to work for them and they were very strict on it being the person who had applied for the job being the person you were speaking to on the phone, speaking for a friend or relative was not allowed.

Bottom line is you should be escalating your suspicions to your supervisor/manager if you think there is something dodgy

And do it in writing (or email), not just verbally.
  • I work for a store that recruits online - everyone applicant has to apply online and book a slot when they when have passed. 1 slot only allowed per applicant.

I had another today, arguing that the store said we have to unlock her application. she was on my screen as rejected, so i told her no!

well she went off on one.

I looked her up and she couldn't spell her name, the national insurance was wrong and she had done 2 separate applications, but the address was correct - i asked her why the details were wrong and she said oops, it's spelt with a c!

i am bringing it up with my line manager when we have out team meeting tomorrow.

it makes me angry that these people are getting application numbers and booking interviews lots of time and genuine people struggle to get them

The fake people surely get caught out if they don't have the right details, like a passport or birth certificate that is asked for at interview?

It sounds very much like she is speaking on the behalf of someone who doesn't speak english very well. Alternatively she could have fake documentation herself hence spelling the 'fake' name incorrectly.

I do hope your 'Preventing Illegal Working' policy is robust enough that people are caught out at interview stage if either of these situations are the case.

For example, do you take the Passport copy on the day and check it against the person you are actually interviewing? There have been reports where A turns up for interview claiming to be B. B then appears with a passport at a later date when offered the job, which is copied and B starts work. B was never interviewed.

If you take ID at a later date can I suggest you start photgraphing the people you interview and compare documents to be on the safe side.
