Bad House Survey

Hi, I had a survey done on a house a few months ago which I am now living in.

Basically they said my oil tank was bunded when in fact it is only single skinned. This was stated as fact and not assumed.

What I'd like to know is do you think I have a claim against my surveyor for compensation, and if so what can I expect to get?

Thanks for your help.

Welcome! :) Was it a full structural survey? How do you know you have a different type of oil tank? What are your current/ future losses?

What loss have you suffered as a result of the survey?

For goodness sake! Are you so hard up for cash you have to scrabble around like this?

OK - it's single skinned. Big deal!

I'm confused. I thought a single skin tank had to be bunded, a double skin tank could be unbunded. A bund being a low wall around the base of the tank to collect any oil that might leak out if the tank is ruptured.

So if it is single skin is it bunded as the surveyor stated?

If not you would have to have a bund wall built or replace the tank with a new plastic double wall tank and therefore you would have a small claim against the surveyor but I'm not sure it would be worth it.

A 'bund' a simply a method of retaining any oil spilled from the tank holding the oil.

So a double-skinned tank is by definition 'bunded'. The 2nd, outer, skin forms the bund.

A retaining wall to capture spilled oil from a single skinned tank is also a bund - just a different method.

Whether a tank HAS to be bunded depends on
    * the date it was installed (before/after the Building Regs were introduced)
    * the size of the tank
    * the location of the tank
