This is a joke! I appreciate peeps have gone and studied but that price is just a rip off, no wonder this country is on it knees.
How many quotes have you got? Its a small job so some practices or engineers may have a minimum fee to make it worth their while even doing it. Maybe try elsewhere.
I assume it includes a site visit and then calcs and drawings for the support. That could be a few hours work so it depends on there hourly rate.
Removing a chimney doesnt take long a day at most so the cost for a general builder to do it isnt going to be that much hence the price quoted. But is that the full cost? If the supporting beam hasnt been calculated how has this been included?0 -
I am a structural engineer with 10 years experience and I would estimate that 70% of our designs are carried out without site visits, i.e. from Architect's drawings.
Some of the fees on here are fantastic, I must relocate to your area! For a single steel beam design we would charge £80 + VAT, then an additional £30 per additional beam.
For a chimney removal we would charge approx £200 + VAT, this would include a site visit within a 20 mile radius of the office.
We are based in Northern Ireland but we carry out work in England and Scotland and have generally found that our fees are comparable to other engineers across the UK. (Apart from London where they are maybe 75% higher)1 -
