Out of curiosity can you have the unplanned overdraft facilities removed?
No. AFAIK, the only way is to get a basic account with Visa Electron.
Also is there any likelihood that arguing this at the bank will benefit me? I know my sister had £80 in charges and HSBC agreed to simply remove all charges, for her - at least she was notified though. Considering I wasn't notified of any problem with my account, the situation it's placed me in, seems unfair.
Difficult to say. It's impossible to notify you about everything. You have signed the T&C that you were supposed to read.

That said, when I look at http://www.hsbc.co.uk/1/2/current-accounts/under-18-bank-account/details I see:
Only spend what you have With MySavings and MyAccount you can only spend what you have in your account. It means you don't have to worry about going over your limit.
Is it some old charge? As I understand this account is for u18 only and get's switched to some more 'adult' and less restrictive when you get 18.

it's got much better in the last few years, now you can get a normal visa card with basic accounts.

I have a few basic accounts due to being in the credit doghouse for almost 6 years... the best basic account in my opinion is Nationwide's... this is what OP needs really, as it will function as a normal account except if a charge puts it over the limit it will just reject the charge. you will need to search for the account though, as no banks publicise their basic accounts as it is more of a statutory requirement for them to offer rather than a money spinner. Basic accounts make them a loss unlike their overdraft accounts which make them billions in interest and charges.

If you want a good credit history, you need to learn to responsibly manage your money. You shouldn't need your bank to tell you when you have ran out of money in order to avoid overspending. Rather, it is your responsibility to ensure you have funds before making a purchase.
