New bank asking for too many details?

Hi everyone
I applied for a new current account today and the bank assistant wanted to know my existing bank account details, as part of my application.
When I went online and reviewed the whole application process I was never asked for my existing bank account.
It seems strange to me for a bank to need different kind of information
depending on the way that the application is submitted. What is your opinion on this? Did you had to provide your bank account details in order to get a new bank account?
Is it only my idea that this seems dodgy? Should I just forget it and trust without asking any more questions?

These days, just be thankful that they don't ask for a DNA sample! Joking aside, they would need to know your old bank account details, to be able to transfer things like wages/salary, direct debits and standing orders. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.

I've been asked about existing bank accounts when opening a new account at a different bank.
For some banks it's like a reference, if you have an existing account that you've had for a while & it's been operated in a responsible way then there is going to be no trouble with any other bank not wanting you as a customer. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
