Wireless problems!!

I know this has probably been done a 1000 times before but i really DO need help.......here is my set up.......desktop pc running windows xp---thomson speedtouch 576 modem/router
dell 1501 laptop,running vista basic.
Ok i set up the router for wireless connection,named the network and put in a new 13 digit wep key......so i did the same on the laptop,checked the network name were the same and the wep key is exactly the same
so when i click on connect on the laptop it says it can`t connect,however if i hover over the network name on th laptop it says signal excellent!..just clicked on show network map and it says the adapter is not connected......god this is doing my head in!!!

just found another bit!! now on the laptop next to the network name it says "the capability of your network adapter does not match the reqirements of this network"A shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not exist.

Try wpa-psk instead, it is much more secure than wep for a start.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

hmm by the error message I'm guessing the network card doesn't support WPA, some don't but newer ones certainly do.
I'm not sure of the problem but something to try. Goto the wireless network settings, the bit where you can change the connection order preference on the different wireless networks you have seen and remove them all from the list and try reconnecting with the key again.

sorry this is no help to you but I have a similar problem with a speedtouch585 wired to this computer, wireless to a desktop upstairs which we always have to click repair to get it to connect to the internet, no problems after that. I have been on an other site looking for answers and have come up with the same advice, I have not tried the last one yet, hopefully tomorrow night.

Will the laptop connect if you switch the encryption off? Best to sort this out in non-encrypted mode then switch on encryption.0 -
