It's the landlords responsibility and decision to do home improvements, have you asked him/her.

Yes, we've got pretty much free reign providing we pay and it's an improvement etc.

I suspect you cannot fit it yourself, as it might be a 'gain' to the landlord, and would invalidate his gas safe certificate.
It would need to be fitted by a properly certificated individual.
Was CORGI, I forget what the new body is called.

The boiler will be at least moderately more efficient when you turn down the heat setting.
In general terms, if the boiler will turn down far enough, and the regulation of temperature is acceptable, this will be as economic as you'll get.

(neglecting the constant electricty use by the pump).

Improvements by a simple timeswitch and thermostat if you would prefer to have the heating on at given times could however be large.

My point is, why would you pay 1 penny to improve someone else's house you are paying rent for, tell him you expect it to have a thermostat and timer control in 2012, the cost to do this when the boiler was fitted would have been minimal.

I will see if the LL can sort it first obviously if I can get it done without paying myself then great, however I don't object majorly about getting it done myself, rented or not it's our home and so I've never had a problem putting new doors in, decorating, landscaping etc.
Mainly because a lot I do myself or I have friends and family in trades which mean I pay mates rates for things, the boiler controls if I get it done will be the same, as my uncles a gas engineer.

Fit a decent wireless digital programmer (such as a Honeywell), rather than a mechanical timer. You can then take that with you should you move.
It's absurd to have CH without some means of automatic time control.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
