dig the old one out, backup, factory restore, check the fan is clean, 10 minutes work.

anything under 6 years old shouldn't be slow, and if it runs, doesn't need replacing.

The fan on my Sony laptop became very noisy, my OH cured it by blowing through with a bicycle pump.

Possibly the experts wouldn't recommend this, but it's as quiet as a mouse now.

Really you should get the dust out, not blow it into the case.

A vacuum cleaner on the output vent of the fan should be fine.

Probably fine, most of the gunk will settle somewhere harmless.... (i.e. not the fan) but as said vacuuming it out is possibly better longer term or pull it apart and give it a real good clean...

Most people will be surprised just how much gunk they suck in.... a bit like looking under the cushions on the sofa!
  • That is a tough question, I guess it depends upon what work you do on the laptop. I use Mac as I do a lot of "creative" stuff with design for products and graphics and it is kind of the industry standard or at least used to be so have pretty much always used mac for work. However we do also have PCs and laptops dotted around the house that the kids use. Regarding longevity I have three imacs, all seven years old, only one has died. I have one Mac powerbook that is 7 years old and still going strong.
Dead PCs total cluttering up the house: 4 and three laptops so I guess that says something?
The downside with Mac is the initial cost and they last so long that Apple stop supporting the software for them, I am finding it increasingly difficult to find new software that will run on my old Apple processors (G4 and G5)
