Does anyone here not have central heating and what do you use/how do you cope?

Just wondered how common not having central heating is, and whether its absence is felt.

I know someone who works outdoors, and he's virtually always hot, even in winter, and only turns on his central heating when he has visitors.

I don't have it. I have blankets everywhere. A few on my bed, one (more if it's cold) by the computer, and a few on the sofa. I've just got an electric throw for the sofa, and use an electric blanket in bed if it gets really cold.

If it's really bad then I use a plug in electric heater, but as I melted one a couple of years ago and got up in the morning to find hot oil spurting everywhere I try not to.

Also lots of layers of clothes.

The biggest problem is drying clothes - it can take over a week in winter, and they're a bit smelly by the time they're dry.

And then there's the damp and mould, which is worse than it needs to be because of the lack of heating.

As you can probably tell, it's not by choice that I don't have CH!

Although it does save a fortune on electric (I don't have a gas supply). My bill is £24 a month.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

I don't have CH, I have one oil radiator and that is sufficient.

    .

There are several options for clothes, Lakeland make a dryer rack which has a tent type arrangement, which warms hanging clothes. I hear it is very good.

A dehumidifier would also stop the smell.

I don't have any central heating. I have a woodburning stove in the living room.

I also have an oil filled radiator in my room which I use to warm my sons' pyjamas before they go to bed.
  • I dont have CH here, but do have a very old draughty Victorian Terrace.

We have a gas fire in the lounge, and an electric on in the dining room. I dont have either of them on very often due to costs.

During the worst/coldest weather I try to get DS and I out for a few hours (coffee shop, SS centre etc) just to warm up

We don't have central heating. We have a gas fire in lounge and an electric night storage heater on the landing, it's warm enough here. Drying clothes is a pain so use local laundrette for the tumble drying.

I do have central heating but rarely use it. Only really for drying clothes when theyre needed for the next day (no tumble dryer)

I do however, have a wood burner in the lounge which is absolutely lovely and heats the downstairs sufficiently throughout the winter with no problems.

I dont bother heating the bedrooms and i prefer a cold bedroom and have a thick duvet on the bed

My parents house hasn't had any for the last few years as the boiler packed up! (Before the boiler broke they had it, only downstairs though.)

The bedrooms have gas fires, apart from one that has an electric radiator. We made do with those and lots of blankets on the beds, hot water bottles and warm pyjamas!

Mum now heats the landing and hall with electric radiators when needed and the living room with a fan heater. She has a tumble dryer and anything that doesn't go in there gets hung infront of the gas fire in the kitchen. To be honest she is fed up of it but there's no making Dad do anything before he's ready!

I am the same, most likely cause I'm still used to it from when I was younger. OH is one who feels the cold and is always turning the radiator up in our room, drives me crackers cause I wake up too hot! We're in a shared house and all bills are included, I think he's gonna get a shock when we get our own place and have to pay for this fuel ourselves!
