I seem to remember (and my memory may also be faulty) that beech is much easier to strike on soil where beech is or was recently grown. Isn't beech particularly fussy about mycorrhizal fungi? I certainly had a slow start to my beech hedge at the last house I owned... never did do too well. Anyway, that might help explain why some people make beech take, and others don't.. ...
Edit ...oh, and my hedge was from supplied 3-year-olds.. the plants, not the supplier!
RHS don't recommend attempting cuttings.
I used the fungi for 2/3 of my 2 year old hedge, and then ran out. There is no difference whatever in the height or health of the hedge from one end to the other! :rotfl:
I bought my hedge on-line and the plants weren't terribly expensive. I'd looked into the idea of growing from cuttings and decided that was a no-no.
Anyway, if I were doing it again, I'd plant hornbeam. Much faster into leaf in spring.
Granny jo is right about taking cuttings at this time of year, sticking them in good soil in a sheltered place. It costs nothing but time, and many shrubs will take over winter.0
