My 5 yr old Dell Inspiron 530 has seen better days. Was looking to replace it but mainly use it for keeping in touch so it doesn't need to be top of the range. Looking for a basic pc that will last me for the next few years, Have looked through threads and don't think my knowledge is up to re-installing operating system and I didn't get any disks with the pc so am looking to replace it. Have seen some on ebay for under £200 but don't know if something like this would be worthwhile.

Know that the operating system is extra.
Thanks

reinstall can be done in 10 minutes, using the factory restore partition, instructions are on the Dell website and on page 100/101 of the manual. It will wipe all your data, so backup anything important first. Your system will work like new afterwards

(xp hold down CTRL+F11 at boot, Vista hold down F8 at boot)
If it didn't come with a disc, it should have a program for you to create one.

No OS on the desktop. You can get free Ubuntu if you don't want to spend a penny on OS.0 -
Thanks for your help. I'll see if my DD will help me with the advice.0

What do you want to use it for?
Has that changed in 5 years .....
For most of us the answer is mainly no........
The biggest non change for home users who don't play games (usually the most demanding) are mail, internet and writing letters.....
All that has really changed are digital cameras and video's.
You don't need Word 2010 to write a letter, indeed the old Word 2.0 back in the 90's did a perfectly good job D
You can use OpenOffice for free..... or if its with your reinstall use that version of word.
The main thing is it seems getting the OS and basic Apps reinstalled AFTER backing up!0 -
