In the case of the UK it allegedly involves certain Avensis and Corolla models from July 2001 to March 2009 and some Prius models from July 2003 to April 2009.

This one is a fault that will cause undue wear if the car is driven badly*. It is highly unlikely that the effects of this will show up during the warranty period.
Toyota could probably have gotten away with this one, so it's actually pretty good that they're doing a recall.
* It's never a good idea to forcibly hold the wheel at full lock on a car with power assisted steering.0 -
I've seen some figures about it:
For the Prius (Gen2) there have been 3 reported instances of the water pump problem in the whole of the EU
For the Avensis and Corolla, there have been 9 reported instances of the steering problem in the whole of the EU
So it's nice to see that they are being proactive and doing a recall even with so few reported problems.
I find it a bit weird how the media seem to pick on Toyota recalls more than the other manufacturers, go figure. Now free from the incompetence of vodafail0 -

.
That's what I thought.
Playing extra safe it seems which is good. Probably can't buy a safer car at the moment than a Toyota. What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
I had my 08 28k miles yaris in the dealers on friday for the electric window recall and asked about the water pump recall at the same time although I know from toyota website it doesn't include yaris. I paid £185 last month to replace the water pump at my local garage (not dealer) and he told me he'd done the same repair on other yaris's of the same age. I was told by dealer's receptionist to email service manager which I have done with a scanned copy of my repair bill but I guess I don't really have any come back if they say no.
I've had a new clutch (under warranty) as well as recalls for clutch and windows so am now thinking of trading in.0 -
The car in front is no longer respectable0

Presumably when Toyota bonnets start flying in front of windscreens at 70mph, or brake pedals are operable from the passenger side, or the ABS/ESP pumps become inoperative Toyota will seek to do nothing about it, seeing as they are no longer respectable.0
