have i been over charged

ive just received my first electric bill for a month and it £130  i cant see how it is so high as there only 2 of us and it a 1 bed flat.

we signed up to a rate that was around 10p kwh at all times and pay direct debit but was told this will take around a month to apply so atm we have 26.6p kwh 6am-midnight and 4.7p kwh midnight -6am and paying as the bill arrives

i have 4 items that are always on fridge/freezer, the wireless router and 2 small pumps for fish tanks.

we have electric heat but don't use it and we have a immersion (not sure if that what it called) boiler but have used that maybe 3 times in the whole month.

i use the washing machine overnight when im getting charged the cheaper rate and i do 2-3 washes a week

we dont have much on for the rest of the day pc on for around 4 hours and tv is on maybe 2-4 hours depending on when my partner gets up.

cooking is usually once a day for around 20-40 mins and the kettle
is boiled once with enough water for 2 cups of tea every day and then boiled full 1.5 litres every 2 days to wash up.

i have a electric shower which is run for maybe 1 hour at the most per week (10 mins shower 3 times a week per person)

ive not been able to work out where 656 kwh daytime and 189 kwh nighttime have been produced

Is the bill based on actual readings or estimated? If the former, are both the opening and closing readings correct?
What tariff charges 27p for peak rate. it is normally around 14p?! Is it corect that you want to be on a standard rate tariff, but you have been placed on a E7 tariff. if so why? Do you have a dual rate meter?
And why will it take a month to switch you to the required E7 tariff? You should go straight onto the tariff you chose.
    Supplier?
How will you heat the property come the winter? If it has storage heaters, then E7 will cost about a third of standard tariff for the heating and hot mwater (on cheap night rate).
PS: it's called an immersion heater.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Hi atarisrocks, but we need some more details to help you

    1. What is your current supplier and tariff?

    2. What is the supplier and tariff you have applied to move to?

    3. What is your expected annual electricity consumption in kWh (and percentage used at the low rate) that you used to base your decision to switch tariff on?

    4. What supply region are you in (or first part of your postcode)?
  • that based on a estimate but only just been able to check it about 10 mins ago as we had to buy a key for the box.

the estimate is almost 300 kwh over estimate for day rates and 2000 kwh under for night time (that like running 10 halogen heaters a hour every night) so we having to see if the information given by the landlord to the engery company before we moved in was correct

we have a duel rate meter and we with npower on a tariff called standard though we did sign up to their January online 2014 tarriff
  • we dont know the expected annual consumption as this is our first place paying bills

we started with npower and then stayed with them but different tariff

    and we live in luton

Your anticipated annual usage should be on the bill you've received ;)

If not, call your supplier and ask them for the information.

    Then follow the advice here:

No, that's not the tariff you are currently being charged on ;)
    nPower standard tariff is:
30.513 p for the first 182 kWh per quarter, and 17.892 p thereafter
Night unit charge (pence per kWh) 5.922p
Note the low rate should be for 7 hours, not 6 ;)

What is that "different tariff" that will charge just 10p per kWh?
  • thanks for all the answers we solved the problem

it turns out my landlord gave the wrong reading got 2 numbers swapped over and npower reduced our bill to £45 and changed our tariff straight away to Energy Online January 14 E7 Electricity which is 12p not 10p still cheaper day rate and 7p night rate

But you'll be paying in excess of £45 per year more in standing charges!
This is a clear demonstration of the errors that can occur by just looking at one part of the tariff make-up.

If you really want help, you will need to answer the questions posed by Wywth in post#3

I realise you may have answered some, but you need to answer them all.
