insulation grants northern ireland joke

Hi everyone, with all this talk of grant availability for home insulation I set about seeking financial help with installing more loft insulation & cavity wall insulation

Of course because I live in Northern Ireland, we were excluded from the general government schemes and I was pointed in the direction of -'warmer homes' which I believe to be the northern ireland body for delivery of the scheme.

Our daughter has a life limiting heart condition which seriously affects her life. One of the issues that affects her is cold and upon seeing that recipt of disability living allowance qualifys for the scheme I set about making an application.

After a period of some months of getting back to me and setting up appointments etc they arrived to tell me that because she wasn't listed as the homeowner we do not qualify!!. What a joke!

She lives with us in our mortgaged home but because its my wife and I listed as the homeowner we do not qualify.

Anyone had a similiar experience or could point me in the direction of avenues of pursuit in gaining some financial help for this sort of thing in Northern Ireland?

Thanks in advance for both reading and replying,

  • I,m afraid I don't have much to add except have you tried the disabled facilities fund. - through your gp/social worker. Or maybe 0300 123 1234 think its bryson house, they give general info re grants/help available.

I will be interested to see other responses as I'm in a similar situation ( 2 children with disabilities ) and I'm currently trying to find out information regarding making my home a more comfortable place for my kids. Have just send an application with warm homes but am in the same situation as you. When I read householder in receipt of dla I assumed me claiming on behalf of my children qualified. Its terrible really who decided because they are under 18 they don't deserve the same treatment as adults, ridiculous

One other point, have you contacted your local counselor- sinn fein, dup etc. I have found them extremely helpful with regards to entitlements and what help is available.

  • No. Just ended up sorting it all myself. "If ye want something done " ... Etc etc. bit of a !!!!!!!! really the whole set up
  • Would still recommend your local councilor, you never know what else you should be getting on your lo behalf.
