Would a leak be covered under home insurance?

Wasn't sure where to ask but figured this is as good as any :-)

Basically I have contents and building nuance through the same company.

Over a period of time my bath has been leaking underneath, tbh I hadn't really noticed it as it doesn't flood iykwim. Anyway since we have come back from our holidays, I've noticed the wooden ceiling in the kitchen has started to rott (under bath) and wallpaper damp, also the Lino is coming up in the bathroom and the skirting board is wrecked round the side of the bath as are the floor boards . ( only noticed this when bath panel was taken off)

Would is be covered under home insurance? We do have water damage cover but wasn't sure as its been going on over a period of time as apose to a flood iykwim.

Thanks x

Have you checked your policy (exclusions)? If you can't see your problem, 'phone the insurer..

All policies are slightly different so it's impossible for anyone here to say whether your provider will pay out or quibble.
  • I would hope so. We have claimed x2 now in diffrent houses for the ceiling to be re plastered and painted through leaks.

A sudden leak might well be covered but something that's been going on for a long time could be considered to be wear and tear and your responsibility.
  • It doesn't matter if it's been happening over a period of time if it's not been noticeable e.g. under bath, behind cupboard etc.

I had a leak that had been going on for about 4 years! It was a constant slow drip that soaked my lounge floor underneath the carpet and underlay (underlay was v thick). It took 2 minutes to fix, but 7 weeks for the floor to dry out with dehumidifiers and fans, carpet was binned and insurance paid out for everything without a murmur.

Unbelievably it wasnt noticeable - and although I worried that they wouldn't believe me, they never questioned it.
  • I think it usually is covered. Isn't it called an "Escape of Water" claim?

you may find that the damage is covered but the repair isn't (as my friend recently had a claim rejected for a leaking shower - but the insurers paid for the resultant damage which seems odd...)
