Price and hassle of removing ornamental fireplace

I have just moved into a new place with nice square walls apart from an ornamental fireplace /surround in the lounge. As far as I can tell it is just ornamental and pretty much stuck on the wall, so if it is removed the wall should be flat again.

It is a wood surround with a tiled inside (nothing going further back than the base wall) and a marble base plate.

I want it removed and any wall damage (if any) making good with plaster. I will then repaint / paper the wall at my leisure. Does anyone have any idea what this would cost for someone to do this and dispose of the mess? I have no clue of even a ballpark.

If I were you, I'd remove it myself, then get someone to block up and skim over - ROUGH ballpark - £350.

That's about what I paid to have my surround and hearth removed, and the wall skimmed. The surround was stone, and about 2m wide.

I have a tiled fireplace and am leaving it as it is. I've done this type of thing in another house I had, the old fashioned features sometimes become a selling point. But you need patience.

If you are saying that at the back of the tiled back you can see the original and existing wall, then all you may be looking at would be filling in a couple of screw holes.

Some people have bought fireplaces, purely for a decorative feature and the hearth is put on the floor, the back panel is offered up to the wall and the wood surround is screwed to the wall to keep the back panel in place.

As long as it doesn't go into a fire chamber ( would be looking at around 10-12'' deep), then I think you could quite easily do it yourself. The only thing may be that you may need to replace the skirting board as it has most likely been cut to fit the hearth
