  • Hello r748spx,

You are entitled to claim tax relief on any work related expenses and you can go back as far as the 2008/09 tax year to make a claim.

As long as you were in employment for the tax year you wish to claim for there should not be a problem.
    Happy to help if required!

    Kind regards
  • Just to add to the previous reply, there are flat rate standard allowances for tools agreed between HMRC and the relevant unions in the appropriate industries. You don't need any 3rd party company to claim these on your behalf. You can submit your own claim if you think you have incurred greater costs than the flat rate allowances but this can be problematic and will delay you getting any repayment you are entitled to. Best really just to ask HMRC to back date (up to 6 years) any flat rate allowances you were not given in your tax code for any of the previous years and work out any resulting repayment. Don't wish to sound discouraging but you might find that the allowances have already been given in your tax codes. Regards.

This is not correct, you cannot go back six years, currently you can go back to 2008/09 as per my original post.

  • What is the flate rate per year from HMRC ?

I received paperwork at my work from a company that does the claim for you, they want 10% of what you get which is good IMO as everyone online wants 25-35% + VAT

  • Hello Tiffster,

Please also note that if your claim for expenses is above £2,500 you will need to register for self assessment with HMRC if you are not already registered as a tax return will need to be submitted instead.

It's your choice, but why pay someone when you can do it yourself for free? Contacting HMRC can seem like a big hassle, until you actually do it and then you discover that for matters such as this, they're not so dreadful after all :)

If you've forked out all of this money on tools, you are only going to get a tax refund back, not the refund of the cost itself. I don't then see why you should reduce this amount further by handing it over to a company who are going to do exactly the same as you could.
Despite the name, I'm actually a laydee!
  • As my expenses are above £2500 i need to go down the self assessment route from what i can make out.
  • Yes, that is correct

  • A related question - if I have claimed (and got refunded) business expenses (travel) of more than 2500 through the company I work for (as a payee), do I still need to send something to the HMRC? I don't think so, but I just want to make sure.
