Hiding wires in plaster board

Options
hi i have a tv on the wall about 1.2m above the floor. I have a power socket and the aerial socket about 1,5 m away from the tv about 50cm from the floor. What is the easiest way to hide the wires please? Thank you

think there are 2 ways of doing it.

first way is to put a channel/trunking/conduit in the wall. While it may be possible at a later date to add other extra cables, the connectors may not pass through.

The second way is to go through the wall from behind. This is a bit unworkable for an outside wall. Also there might be a connector and hole size issue

Plaster boarding the cables in place will mean the whole wall will need to be plastered, rather than just the channel filled in.

Possibly could be done down the ceeling

Is the plasterboard on a wooden framed partition wall or overlaying an old wall so in effect solid? Tapping should give the answer if you don't know already.

If it's on a hollow partition wall you may well be able to just drill holes and drop the cable down in the gap although there may be a cross piece in the way or if it's an outside wall some insulation. Your description suggests there is some horizontal displacement too which could also scupper that plan.

On a solid wall faced with plasterboard you'd need to run a channel al the way down and unless you are skilled at DIY this will never be an invisible job so you may as well run a plastic conduit on the surface.

Hi thank you for your comments. It is an outside wall with wooden frame + brick on the back of it. I think the easiest based on our comments will be to make a hole behind the tv - drop the cable straight down - and then run it behin the skirting to the left and bring it up to the socket. Does it sound ok? Then all holes will be covered + I will be decorating soon so it should be ok? Thanks

    That sounds a plan.

I think there is a DIY board on this site or certainly there will be elsewhere where you may get good advice.

I've dropped speaker cables down an inside wall from the loft by nibbling out bits over the cross pieces of the partitioning but it wasn't easy. You can never completely hide a complete channel of filler so if that was the only option you'd need to paper the wall afterwards.

Are you going to hang your tv on this plasterboard wall? I so hope you attach to studding rather than plasterboard. Otherwise you may need a chipboard base under the plasterboard attached to the studs

I wonder if you could use a 'floating wall' ... like in this thread over at avforums!

Shows a fire beneath the TV...

You have to run the power in safe zones.
