cam belt snapped - repair or scrap?

really appreciate advice here. have a 05 plate peugeot 807...73k miles the cam belt snapped and peugeot are saying ti's not worth repairing.
we have no savings and are not in great financial shape....do we spend the £1-2000 to repair it? we need a 7 seater but only use it for school rota, there are days it sits on the drive.
wondering if we're better off scrapping it, saving the insurance and the petrol, and using the small car i run for work even tho we cna't fit the whole family in it, at least for 6 months then maybe buying something before next summer. tbh a 7 seater car is not cheap, even an old banger. but this car has just been one repair after the other, last year it had a new gear box, just last week put a new battery in it...
also, has anyone used the C8 centre in Edinburgh?
many thanks!

I'd sell it as a car for "spares and repair" Put it on Ebay or somewhere like that and you should find someone out there who knows what they are doing and can fix it themselevs cheaply and will pay more than the scrap rate.
The car still isn't really old enough just to scrap.0 -

I'd mirror this advice, although would offer that 7 year old Peugeots are pretty much fit for the scrap. Purely opinion/experience. I wouldn't waste the money repairing it, OP; at that age and mileage that's when they're going to start giving trouble.
My Dad has a 2007 308 sat in his garage for the last two months as testament to this.0 -
Do you have full no claims......
I think you have 2 years to preserve it so bear that in mind if insuring 1 car in the family.
Someone on eBay has a 806 with everything broken but the cambelt !!!
Its certainly worth a go....
Did you try a non PUG dealer/indy?0 -
First thing to do is find out If your engine is a non interference engineor not. If its non interference, whack another cambelt on it. If its an interference engine, sell it for spares0

Translation - non interference means the engine is not damaged when it snaps........;)
If you don't know call some local (independent garages) .. (several) explain and ask how much
If they all tell you figures then go with one of them or eBay.
If they all/mostly tell you the engine will be damaged then go with eBay.0 -
Ok aimed at the modifiers but these guys might be worth a call for a second opinion www.ecosse-peugeot.co.ukWhat if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0

Agree if you can find a specialist for that engine you will probably get a much better price, certainly more than a main dealer. Have you looked or asked on Peugeot forums as well?0
