Best Lifelong Pet Insurance.

Hello everyone, I'm new here. A friend recommended you highly for your help and advice :)

I'd love some advice please on pet insurance. We have two dogs, 3 and 6 months old and we want to insure them. We've decided on a lifelong type of insurance and the ones we've seen on the web would be about £10 for each dog. BUT we have no idea which one is best and I feel like imploding lol. PetPlan and Argos seem to be good. I also wondered about a possible discount for taking policies out on two dogs too.

I'm useless at knowing what is best so I thought I'd ask what you guys thought was the better insurance to get. Thanks in advance :)

Basically, you get what you pay for, so choose one at the higher end of what you can afford. A £10 a month policy wont cover for much, and beware when a policy states that it allows for up to £4000 a year in vet fees , this might only be a maximum of 500 for any individual event. This is not going to cover any operations or major illnesses . Both my sister and I had direct line and they refused to pay up for either of us ( I was £1000 out of pocket and she was 4000 !) Check all the details of the policy. Good luck with your searches.
  • I researched when our two were pups approx. 4 years ago and went with Virgin. Started off at approx. £12 & £11 and it's now £20.13 & £21.50. Obviously it goes up as they get older. It's a lifelong policy and I've claimed twice with no problems and received a quick pay out. I'm really happy with them.

    Maybe have a look here

Some companies do offer a discount for multiple pets but I'm not sure which.

By all acounts Petplan are good but expensive. As the pups are young you should be able to get a fairly good price - £10 p/m does not sound bad.

We have dog insurance with Argos (Platinum Cover) at the minute for a 2 year old dog. There was 1 claim approx 18 months ago for a badly cut paw which was dealt with efficiently. The renewal however had gone up from £10 to £17 p/m the next year so I lapsed this & took out a new policy with them online for much the same as we had been paying. The Argos advisor said it was ok to do this but claims were excluded for 14 days and existing conditions excluded but as the claim did not involve an ongoing condition this was ok for us.
  • sweet! i hae 3 dogs too, but i can't afford to get them insurance. you have a lucky dog! ;)
  • We have seven dogs (been as much as eleven at one point) and all are insured through Petplan.
As others have said they can be slightly more expensive but in all my years I have never had any claims questioned or turned down in any way at all. This despite some fairly major operations and accidents through the years (usually the same dogs lol) .
Again as others have said please be careful of the small print as all may not be as it seems.
My advice would be to go for the most comprehensive cover you can afford and do a little research on who you are thinking of using.
Good luck and here's to many happy years with your dogs.
  • Thanks so much everyone for the advice x :T

The links have helped me to really narrow down the options. I've been reading the five star rated insurers and the ones we have thought about are in there. Brilliant!

All the best to you and your furry friends. I can get this sorted now x :)

I'd check with your vet which ones they recommend. We unfortunately went to the cheapest and only found to our cost years later when we had to claim. By the time we had realised our mistake our dog was over 8years old and no other insurance company takes them after they reach a certain age.
I know our vet recommends Petplan and its the only insurance company where they will deal directly with the comany and wait for payment, the others they ask you to pay and then claim, since they have had problems getting their money in the past.
Our dog is now 14 years old and we have now cancelled the insurance since the max we would get back is £250 per claim after they have deducted a,b and c. Unless she has 2 or more claims we were paying out more that we would get back.
Look after the pennies and the £££s will look after themselves
  • I have a question regarding pet insurance. My dog was insured through Argos and had an ongoing illness which they dealt with directly with my vet (Medivet).
As my dog was on 2 lots of pills and was hospitalised 4 times over the last 10 months, I was not sure how much money was still left out of the £2500 allowed for the year.
As I said, Medivet dealt directly with Argos so I had no idea what the situation was regarding my account. Last week a cheque arrived made payable to me and a covering letter saying this was what I was due.
Of course I banked it. Last Friday my poor dog had to visit Medivet again as he was really poorly, he suffered from cluster epileptic seizures.
Regrettably we decided that our beloved Tom had suffered too much over the last year and we decided to have him put to sleep. A heartbreaking decision.
One of the Medivet employees asked why I hadn't passed on the money paid to me, (£1100) and that I owed that amount to them. She said it was a mistake and the money should have gone to them. I told them that I had spent most of it and I am not in a position to pay them.
So there are two questions, do Medivet have legal redress on the money paid to me, and am I obliged to pay them?
There wasn't any mention of paying or passing any money on to Medivet, and I think it was a mistake by Argos. During this last year I have not had any statements from Argos or from Medivet, they could have been charging me for any work or medication I was was not aware of.
What is legal position, I don't think I done anything wrong.
    Any help would be great

I'm so sorry that you lost your beloved dog.

However the cheque that you received was clearly for the dogs treatment.

What did you think it was for?

You say you have spent the money but you clearly owe this to the vet and need to repay this.
  • I genuinely thought the money was the difference between what had not been used.
Surely it is down to Medivet to claim from Argos? Although I can't see Argos paying the amount again.
What have I done wrong? And this was the first time I received any payment because Argos has always sent the payments to Medivet in the past.
I had no knowledge of what the status of my account was, as Argos and Medivet did not keep me informed of payments etc. Is this not poor business management?

Would any judge say that "I should have known"? I don't think so. What legally have I done wrong, the cheque was made out to me and not a mention of passing on the payment to Medivet.
Thank you for your information, any other thoughts would be appreciated
