Playing DVD's

Just got a new computer and tried to play a DVD. Opened up Windows Media Player and got the following message;

Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer.

What do I need to do to watch the DVD? I am using Windows XP Home Edition

ditto.... i have never had any problems, in fact got the software with the pc (inc the dvd player) when i bought it

yep, you will need to install software in order to decode the dvd's,

you may have this on cd otherwise there are free dvd players for your pc liek https://www.videolan.org

Try Media Player Classic (it's free). This is nothing to do with Micro$oft. Use google to find it.
How mean not to include a player with a DVD reader!
I got powerDVD with one motherboard I bought and WinDVD with another. To get nothing for a whole PC is poor value. In saying this I only use MPC and it does not use the power/winDVD codecs.

Still no joy with https://www.videolan.org, but found the key for my Power DVD. Thanks everyone.
