Media player files not playing through TV

I've purchased a Sumvision Media player. I've downloaded mp3 music files, digital photos and some movies from my pc and the quality of playback through the TV is superb. But I've noticed that some video files won't play? Although they're clearly located on the media player hard drive (they're listed) they just don't play. I take it that it must be the format that these files are, is there a way to establish what format they are so that I can check whether the media player supports that format? And can anyone recommend a video convertor that will convert these to a format that the media player can handle?

Just check the file properties of the movies and the specs of your player to see if they need to be converted. Bear in mind you'll lose some quality when cross-coding.
