Sometimes people have to take some of the responsibility themselves surely.

When you had been assaulted once, why didnt you do something to lessen the risk of it happening a second time an hour later.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • after the first assault my managers attended i was given first aid i was bleeding from a head wound and had some bruises i think i may have been in shock but the next thing i remember is my managers had all disapeared and my colleague needing assistance/help with the same guy i went to help and was assaulted again in process.
yes, the risk of being assa`ulted does come with the job but i thought the risk had to be reduced to its lowest form.

And could this have been done in a practical manner?

It appears that you were assaulted twice by the one person. Even though the assaults were only a few minutes appart, it could still be an important factor here in the way you feel about the incident.

Edit: No it obviously is a factor with you, but have you communicated that to the management.

    QUOTE]

agree. and the nature of the OP's work suggests that there should be policies and procedures in place to reduce the risk of the same type of incident occuring again. it seems in this case that management failed to address the OP's concerns or even do anything about it ie risk assess.

On the flip side though i would say, i myself work with someone who can be incredibly violent at times, but that is what i am paid to do, attacks are daily occurances but it is a case of being vigilant, making sure that incidents are recorded and if appropriate reported and following this up with a risk assessment for any future occurances. This doesn't completely eliminate risk but then thats your job and you cant expect anything less than the possible risk of attacks.

with regards to management, it seems like they are being a little negligent. it is their job to risk assess, sort out staff to client ratios and liaise with other professionals about this individuals medicine/therapy to reduce the risk as far as they possibly can. the risk will always be there. sounds to me like the management need a shake up.

you may possibly have a case regarding your employer not following the correct policies and procedures but without seeing all the info i wouldn't be able to say for sure.

We've seen a lot of people come and go in our establishment, some can handle it and others cant, we've had ex servicemen who have been like scared puppies and others who seem to cope fine. its no bad reflection on you at all

  • As long as you have had the correct training I cannot see an issue?

if you haven't and procedures were not followed then that is a completely different story of course.

Isn't the risk of assault just part of the job?

Would you ask that question to someone who works in any other profession?
People do not go to work to be assaulted by anyone (unless they are a boxer :rotfl:)
I mean they dont put "may be assaulted in the job advert".

I work in care and do not accept being assaulted as part of my Job,Would you?
  • Really? A nurse should go into work and expect to be assaulted?

I work on a short stay unit. I was punched by an old woman in front of witnesses. I still don't understand why. She just turned around and punched me. No record of dementia, discharged and waiting for her family to pick her up, no longer had the anesthesia on board.

It's been written up as an unprovoked violent assault on staff. Unfortunately when hospital security showed up she, and her family pulled the "no English" line. Management even went as far as to say in their culture unfortunately violence against women is fairly common and nurses are viewed as servants.

So this makes it all right.

I should go to work and expect to be assaulted because it's cultural???

What a disgrace, did the family show any kind of remorse or just nmake excuses? Whatever happened to zero tolerance and refusal to treat?

I hope there was no lasting physical trauma, it will be easier to accept mentally if you feel it was unprovoked but not malicious. Don't let these things set you back.

If you feel that the system let you down, could you pursue the family directly through the civil courts?
