Week after MOT - engine seizes?

Hello All,

My car went through it's MOT last week and needed some work carried out to the tune of £220.

This morning on the way to work it started billowing black smoke and I had to pull it over as it stopped completely. My roadside assistance came and it's now at the garage (the one that carried out the MOT) Both the roadside assitance guy and the guy at the garage seem to think the engine has seized :(

Should somehing have been picked up on at MOT? And is this the end of my car?

Many Thanks :o

  • MOT is an inspection only, no parts are removed from the car, it won't pick up engine issues.

What was the £220 worth of work? Was that engine related?

When did you last have a full service and oil change?
  • It went in for a mot not a service. It drove onto and off the ramp and was given a pass.

When did you last check the oil or have it serviced?

The only thing I can think that may be related to the MOT is if they did the rev test, where they ask you to rev the engine up to its maximum RPM for a few seconds. I've noticed they do it more on diesels to see if it's really smokey.

An engine in reasonable nick shouldn't be affected but if it's teetering on the brink of failing then that could be the final straw.

Isn't it only on diesels, the 'visible smoke' test. I'm sure MoT stations have signs warning that the test could damage 'weak' engines and disclaiming responsibiity for any damage caused by the test.

It might well be only on diesels, and as far as I know it's a very brief "foot to the floor for just a second" moment. I heard that there was an outcry about it with people claiming MOT test centres were ruining their engines.

If an engine can't withstand a few seconds of revving (while hot) then it is probably not fit for use anyway.

It didnt fail whilst the MOT was being done so no issues with that.

Petrol have emissions test but diesels just a smoke test as mentioned.

The engine's state of health is not checked as long as it passes these tests. You could drain all the oil out as long as the engine lasted long enough to complete the test then it will pass.

If the engine is running and chucking out black smoke then it has not seized.

When was it last serviced? Did it have antifreeze in, Oil level?

    What happened exactly?
