Okay, but is smoking 1 cigarette every 4 months as damaging as smoking 20 a day? Of course it isn't. And in the same way that some people can smoke 20 a day and live for a hundred years, perhaps peroxide isn't as damaging as you say to every individual's hair. I was warned about hairloss when having my daughter - never happened. Perhaps everyone isn't the same.

My hair shows no sign whatsoever of being damaged. BBDs add protein (keratin) back into the hair before smoothing the cuticles back down. I've had 2 which made little difference, which rather implies that the hair cuticles weren't in bad shape, doesn't it?

As I already said, "the visible effects are greater or lesser in different people and there is a dose response". Longevity is NOT a measure of health nor quality of life it is a measure of lack of death or lack of terminal health conditions. Smoking causes or contributes to numerous health problems, you would find detrimental effects in every single even vaguely regular smoker if you ran blood tests, fitness screens and biopsies. Even one cigarette has acute effects.

Unless you have seen your virgin hair under a powerful microscope and compared it to your dyed hair or participated in some of the studies that measure protein loss you cannot logically claim no damage. Yes peroxide does do basically the same thing to all hair, a certain amount of structural protein is removed with the pigments because they are all 'jumbled up' in the shaft. Very fine hair will tend to visibly suffer from the loss of structural proteins before coarser hair, because coarse hair starts out with a stronger structure.

I still have no idea why you think the Brazilian blow dry is relevant or why you think this implies the cuticle is in good shape. I am a scientist, if you want to explain what you mean in scientific terms (lay version) I will be able to understand.

No these products do not add protein back as the manufacturers imply in the advertising - and even some hairdressers claim -current technology does not allow for permanently rebonding structural lipids nor structural proteins just temporarily supporting the structure. The only proteins that can enter the shaft of the hair are hydrolysed ('chopped up') or peptides - the standard keratin molecule is far too large to slip under the cuticle.

  • I went red from brown about 7 years ago and had absolutely no problems with hair damage or even the upkeep - my hair seemed to love being red and held on to the pigment for dear life! The problems started when I stupidly bleached my hair and re-dyed it red after a few months - the red now fades so quickly and my hair is sad and frizzy. Poor hair.

But as a fake redhead, I'd say go for it! It's a great colour to have. :)
  • Just a word of warning...red is high maintenance. It fades really quickly even when using a shampoo specifically for coloured hair.

I agree! I just posted about where to get cheaper hair dye as mine fades really quick!!!
