£3000 Council rent arrears and i'm jointly liable

As others have flagged up this will not be the case where the parties are signed up to one contract with J&SL - merely moving out to live elsewhere does not end your liabilities under the contract unless formally agreed in advance with the LL and co-tenantTorry_Quine wrote: »Yes if she can show proof that she was living elsewhere during the period in question that should satisfy them.0 -
I'd be worrying about other expenses too. Has he taken on any loans, debt, extended anything, ignored other bills? Did she remove her name from everything else?
Did she move in with someone else/other people? Was her name added to the electoral register, council tax, or anything? Just thinking of proof...

Regardless of where she was living, if she was on the tenancy agreement then she is still liable. Not what you'll want to hear but she should have removed her name herself or double checked that he ex had done it.
I would also be getting a copy of her credit report to see if there are any other unpaid joint debts etc.0 -
Thank you everybody for your replies. It's just as i suspected, because she's tied to an agreement then there's not a lot she can do. Yeah she moved out to live elsewhere but she's only on the electoral register in the new address, her name does not appear on any bills.
I do appreciate and agree that she is at fault for not ensuring that her name was removed from the tenancy.
She says that as far as she's aware she's not on any bills etc there.......however it wouldnt put it past me for the ex to still have some bills etc in her name. I'll get her do check her credit file for the utility bills, but how does she check the council tax?0 -

E-mail or write to council tax but they will probably want to see where she has been named on a new council tax bill. I don't think water appears on the credit file I wouldn't trust that as the sole source of information. Whichever supplier they were with at the time ... telephone them all then follow up with an e-mail or letter.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0
