I've did my undergrad at Liverpool last year and stayed on to do a Masters as well.

The uni is really friendly in my opinion. It is all located on the one campus and is really easy to get around. What course are you going to do? Some of the buildings are quite old fashioned - but some (i.e. engineering / management) have been updated and they are always upgrading departments.

Liverpool as a city is great - getting better with the run up to capital of culture - you'll always have somehting to do - the guild is one of the best i've been to.

Not sure if your living in or at home - but if you plan to take a car - don't bother - student parking is a nightmare and you won't get a permit for the uni car parks.

If you have any specific Q's let me know and I'll try and answer them - feel free to post or PM me.

Liverpool - wow! what a city!

Fantastic place to study and to live - I graduated in 2003 and it's one of the nicest, friendliest and beive it or not, safest cities I've been. Because they've had the bad reputation (Toxteth riots in '80's) they've cracked down, and it's really safe now!

Liverpool's great (and pretty cheap too)

    ahhh, back in the day!

    what you studying???

smam and DJ, were you in Halls??? I was in Rankin hall!
  • I WENT TO LIVERPOOL TOO!!!!! :j I graduated in 2003 in Geology and Physical Geography. Stil got loads of friends up there and my course are having a reunion next Month.

Man alive the place is amazing! The Uni has Time Tunnel on a Saturday night and Double Vision on a Monday night. Get there early cos it's all doubles a pound on a Monday adn the vodka runs out realy quickly.

Also - The Raz - a complete dive (meat market) but always full of students and it's cheap as chips.

I was in McNair Hall - best by far Am_Gam - we had the computers, the shop and we were nearest to the bus stop and the dinner hall and of course CARNEY BAR! (Which sadly no longer resembles the old mans pub it used to be with Karyoke. Shame.)

Seriously though - you'll have so much fun in Liverpool - and it's European Capital of Culture in 2008! Plus you have the Grand National too. Cheap cheap cheap cheap!

ambla - no i wast' in halls, but my friends were so i spent loads of time in r & g and moreton, lived on smithdown near by - lara this is a brilliant place to live in your first year out of halls, loads of shops, supermarkets, hideous smithdown ten pub crawl, there's also allerton which is a bit nicer , and near all the gorgeous park lands.

i'm still at liverpool, i live in the city as do my family, lots might say i'm boring for not moving away but i love it!
  • I'm in my second year at Sheffield Uni and it's brilliant! Its a town, without feeling too much like one (everyone is really friendly!). Low cost living (you can get student rents from about £42 a week!), and you are just 20mins or so from some really beautiful hills and countryside! Its one of Britain's safest cities as well I think, or at least that is what they told me on the open day, and I've had no trouble.

The uni itself is great (I'm at Uni of Shef, don't know much about Hallam). The students union is voted one of the best (might even be top) in the country, and basically whatever you want to do with your time it is possible! There are clubs and societies for most things (sports and activities), or you can start one if you want! Uni sports hall, pool and gym are amazing.

The university services are really helpful too, if you have any problems or want advice. I could go on and on, but if you want to know more just message me or leave a post! :)

As for location, I think Sheffield is pretty good. It's fairly central, with good rail links, and there is the Sheffield/Doncaster airport nearby for when you want to leave the country (i think thomsonfly do low cost flights!)! The only down side if you have a car is the number of one way streets!

    Basically, I think it's great! :D
  • You know what Lara - whoever posts stuff on here concerning the uni's you asked about - they're gonna say they're wicked! Best way to find out (if you can afford it) is to pay a trip to the cities and have a look round the universities on Open Days. It'll help you decide, I went round five uni's and I didn't choose until I went to Liverpool - my last visit - as I just felt I had to go there. If you do visit the cities - you'll know for sure which one you want to go to!

Good luck What are you planning on studying? L:ike the other said, PM me if you have any questions about Liverpool!

My daughter thought so too - apart from the hills :D

We still bought her a bike though, so I'd take that into consideration Lara :)

    Good luck wherever you choose.

I think that's true. A long long time ago, I visited Durham for an interview and thought "Yes, this is it, this is where I belong."

More recently, I've been doing the uni tours with my son, and until he went he just didn't know which he liked best. After each visit he knew where the uni fitted in his order of preference and fortunately it fitted with my order of preference too - not that my preference mattered, you understand, but it was nice to think I knew what would suit him.

Anyway, Southampton is his second choice, and IMO the shopping experience there was WICKED! I'm afraid that's played a large part in forming my preferences ... :D

    top advice there FFW

the visits to my top six made my mind up quite quickly! The way each place treats you will have a big sway on your decision...... After i'd visited everywhere, my top two choices quickly became my bottom two!!!
