Anyone know what we can do .r.e sky box blowing due to power cut?

Like the title says really!! we have had probs with it since we had a bad power cut for 9 hours which was 2 weeks ago. Yesterday our sky box packed up and the chappy today said it's due to a power surge in the box..i.e power cut. Do we have any rights to complain or is it just tough? £120 it's going to cost.

  • I would have thought it could be difficult to prove that a power surge caused the failure. Even if it was a power surge its going to be difficult or even impossible to prove who caused it.

You might just have to pay up for a new box however, you can get surge protectors that you plug in between vunerable equipment and the mains to stop this sort of thing happening again.

You did not say how old is the box? Even if it is out of warranty, if you make the right noises = "I am thinking of cancelling Sky and going to Freeview" they will often change the box for free.

I had the same problem. We lost use of the Sky+ box on a Sunday due to a power cut. I called Sky and the guy was very helpful, went through all the troubleshooting stuff, but in the end it was decided that the box was dead and I needed and engineer, at a cost of £65 + parts (poss new box), and the next available date was the following Friday (wife not best pleased as she was going to be off all week!!).

I reluctantly booked the engineer and then spent a few minutes on Google, another 10 minutes with the box, and Hey Presto!, everything back to normal. I even got my saved progs back! Try this site:

The thing to remember is that the Sky box is just like a PC and sometimes all it needs is a re-format.

    Good luck!

PS. I phoned Sky back to cancel the engineer and they didn't seem that surprised when I said I had solved the problem myself!
  • Sky boxes are infamous for packing up. When I undertake work in someones home I ask them to unplug the box before I start.

SKY engineers are amazing they will diagnose 'the electirician must have blown it when he was doing his tests'. Without knowing what they did

when the power goes off the cheaply made power supply cools down, and when it comes back on the box doesn't work. This is a design fault in the box.
