Voice amplifier

Does anyone know about voice amplifiers? I'm sure there are some mega expensive ones around but I was hoping to either find a cheaper one or a free to return one if it doesn't work for my nan who can only produce a quiet whisper. Sometimes you can hear the whisper if your standing next to her, other times you have to put your ear near to her mouth, would an amplifier still work?

I wonder about alternatives - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYydnhu6NbU - unfortunately all autolarynxes I can find seem to be murderously expensive, for no good reason.
Actual voice amplifiers may be problematic.
In general, they are going to pick up ambient noise just as well as the voice.
It's a pity that there aren't more inexpensive options - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mighty-Boom-Ball-USB-Portable-Vibration-Speaker-Phone-iPad-iPhone-MP3-Gifts-Box-/150906287706?pt=UK_TravelTickets_Accessories_RL&var=450119169741&hash=item2322b7365a as a stupid example - with a mp3 player - would work well, but is clearly not very suitable.
The electrolarynx products seem to all exceed 400 quid.0
